Carlos Marquez De La Plata

Dr. Carlos Marquez de la Plata, Ph.D.

Director of Research

Dr. Marquez de la Plata is a clinical neuropsychologist whose research focuses primarily on identifying and ultimately improving neurocognitive and functional impairments related to various brain illnesses such as Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), stroke and Alzheimer’s disease.

Dr. Marquez de la Plata leads the research department at Pate and provides clinical oversight of patient treatment plans and treatment teams at the Dallas location.

He was instrumental in the validation and publication of Pate’s unique treatment method, the PERPOS (Pate Environmentally Relevant Program Outcome Scale). The PERPOS is a measuring scale used to define the need for structure and the ability to handle distractions within a given environment. It accurately assesses an individual’s current tolerance levels and provides a guideline for improving these abilities in each phase of treatment.

Dr. Marquez de la Plata supervised data collection and statistical analysis for a study on the PERPOS and co-wrote the paper published in 2017 on the validation of the instrument. Ecologically Relevant Outcome Measure for Post-Inpatient Rehabilitation. Neurorehabilitation, doi: 10.3233/NRE-161403).

His leadership of research at Pate includes initiating an innovative pilot program to mentor Pate therapists in conducting their own research on interventions they create for treatment.  The TIPS (Therapeutic Intervention Protocol Sharing) program will help build the body of brain injury rehabilitation knowledge.

Dr. Marquez de la Plata is currently a clinical assistant professor in the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center psychiatry department. He is a member of UTSW’s admissions committee for the Ph.D program in clinical psychology and sits on the research committee in the same department.
